Five Ways to Flick on your Energy Switch

Don’t you just love summer?  You just want to be out and about doing things.  Then there are the backyard BBQ’s, pool parties, trips to the beach, and getting ready for vacations!  You’re ecstatic about the excitement that summer brings, but then also find yourself going through energy slumps.  And getting yourself out of the hot temps into A/C or drinking lots of ice cold drinks isn’t refreshing you either.  Hey, I hear ya!  I know that I’m in an energy slump when I doze off during a train ride back home from the City…  Not quite what my neck likes.  So, if the A/C, power drinks or iced coffee aren’t the solution, what is?  Well, here are 5 much better ways to flick on that energy switch of yours!

  1. Surround yourself with people who energize you.  I know this sounds logical to you.  But do you truly actively seek out people who lift you up and make you feel good?  This has made a big difference in my own life.  While I truly love and admire certain family members and friends, I started to pay really close attention to how I was feeling after spending time with them.  If I noticed that I was ready to take a nap afterward, it was a clue that I was drained.  I’m not telling you to cut out these people from your life, but think about how much time you spend with them and, importantly, then spend time with people who make you feel good.  Sort of like creating balance in your time spent with others.  Positive offsetting the negative.  People who energize you will have you feeling motivated, happy, juiced up, thinking deeply and inspired.
  2. Give your complaint junkie a spa day.  Replace the word complaint with whatever your junkie might be:  gossip, whining, nag, criticism or conflict.  Tell her that she’s entitled to a day off and can spend a day at the spa, being pampered, getting a massage, pedicure, manicure, etc.  It’s all about focusing on beauty for that day.  And when she creeps up, remind her that fortunately you didn’t sign her up for a facial to have her blackheads removed, so she needs to just sit back and enjoy herself.  You wouldn’t believe how much energy you waste throughout the day with whatever your junkie is.  My personal one is criticism (yep, I’m someone who has these perfectionism tendencies…).  So, when you redirect your energy to focus on beauty and appreciating it, you’ll get a great boost and will feel light.  Here’s the thing – I’m not telling you to just think positively for the day.  In my own experience, that doesn’t work for me because I beat myself up if I do have a negative thought.  Instead, I shift and find something to appreciate…
  3. Create harmony in your environment.  Have you noticed how you feel when you’re in a nicely decorated home environment, without constant noise and electronics clutter?  Or how about your office/cube?  Years ago, I made the decision to get rid of the TV in our bedroom, unplug any appliances that weren’t in use, and turn off the power strips.  We’re exposed to high levels of electro-magnetic fields nowadays and forget that this is an energy zapper for us.  Plus, blaring noise through the sound system, TV or iPod amps us up and numbs us, too.  Give yourself the gift of peaceful silence for some time throughout your day.  Also, get rid of your stacks of old magazines or stuff you just don’t use.  Following the principles of Feng Shui, you’ll allow for flow of energy in your environment, which also invigorates you!
  4. Tap into the healing powers of water.  You know, like stepping into the cool ocean on a hot day…  Or drinking lots and lots of filtered water to stay hydrated.  Iced coffee and iced tea don’t qualify as “water.  Drink water first thing in the morning when your body is dehydrated from regenerating you while you sleep.  Water is vital for all your metabolic processes, not to mention flushing out toxins, so keeping well hydrated is so important.  Water will heal your body and uplift your mind.  Plus, as a summer bonus:  go for a swim in the ocean.  People in other countries recognize that salt water is known to help cure skin and other diseases.
  5. Stop and breathe – deeply.  Heard about oxygen bars popping up?  Well, there is a reason.  Many of us are shallow breathers and don’t get enough oxygen to our cells to regenerate.  This means that the air you take in hovers somewhere around your lungs, but doesn’t make it down to your belly.  Breathing deep into your belly helps relax muscles, eases tension, relieves pain, and makes your heart stronger.  What does all this translate into?  Energy!  So, what’s the best way to do this?  Inhale air through your nose and concentrate on feeling it expand into your belly.  You can easily feel it by placing a hand over your belly.  Hold your breath counting to 3 and then slowly release the breath through your mouth.  Try this exercise 5 times.
